There just is not always time to prepare and make a fresh vegetable. Other times, what does not look bad in the produce department of your grocer, is super high-priced due to seasonality. Times like those, I might reach for a can of “Italian Cut” Green Beans. Frankly, I know something about “Italian” food and I have no idea what’s Italian about them, but they are the best canned green beans out there. You will find them packed by Furmano’s as well as Allen’s.
A couple of months ago, I promised to share a secret I use to add character and flavor when I prepare canned or frozen vegetables. That secret is Tabasco Sauce. I use very little, such a small amount no one will ever know it is there. Even so, it “brightens” the flavor and will have your diners exclaiming, “These beans are good tonight”. So, grab a can of Italian Cut Green Beans and put them in your pantry. Then, the next time you need a vegetable side dish and nothing else seems to fit, try my secret!
- 1 14 Ounce Can of Italian Cut Green Beans
- 1 Tablespoon Butter or Margarine
- 2 Drops of Tabasco Regular Hot Sauce
- Salt to Taste
- 3 Twists of the Black Pepper Grinder
- Open the green beans and drain most, but not all of the juice into the sink. Pour beans and remaining juice into a small sauce pan. Place on a burner and set the heat to medium.
- Add the butter and allow it to melt and the juice to come to a simmer. Do not stir a lot ... these are canned beans and will break easily.
- Add the Tabasco, salt and pepper. Stir carefully once around. Remove from heat, cover and use within 5 minutes or you will need to reheat them.
Hi, thanks for sharing. I’m wondering if it’s OK to copy some of the text in my site?
